Alton Kumalo was born in Zululand in 1939 and came to Britain in 1961 to play in the all-African musical, King Kong, according to his biography in the Crucible Theatre programme. Kumalo was the first African actor at the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he stayed for five years. He left the RSC to found Temba Theatre Company.
