"Thea Sharrock's production is funnier and sunnier than [Michael] Boyd's [RSC one] and almost continuously enchanting. It may not dig quite so deep, but on a summer's night by the Thames, it is irresistible." ~ Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraph, 9 June 2009, in Theatre Record 2009, Issue 12
"Dick Bird's stripped-back design doesn't generate much atmosphere - the set is full of sanded-down wooden pillars that look more Shaker chic than rural romance." ~ Dominic Maxwell, The Times, 10 June 2009, in Theatre Record 2009, Issue 12
"It takes a while for Thea Sharrock's Forest of Arden to stop feeling like well-wrought tourist Shakespeare. In truth, even when it does, there are some very peculiar ticks to this groundling-tickling production. The only actor of colour plays the God Hymen, for instance, in feather shorts and a gold, see-through shirt while everyone else is in full, Elizabethan regalia - the difference between the backstabbing court and the sexually slippery forest marked by the degree to which the women resemble grandly upholstered pieces of furniture." ~ Lucy Powell, Metro (London), 10 June 2009, in Theatre Record 2009, Issue 12
"Smaller parts are excellently played too. Trevor Martin is a touching old Adam, Ewart James Walters a startling Hymen, and Michael Benz, as Silvius, a most engaging shepherd. Three cheers, too, for fight director Kevin McCurdy and the most bruisingly inventive punch-ups of the season." ~ Kate Kellaway, Obsever, 14 June 2009
