The Tempest (2009): New Shakespeare Company, Open Air Theatre, London
PRINCIPAL CAST: Michael Camp (Caliban, Ferdinand); Matt Costain (Ariel); Akiya Henry (Miranda, Antonio); Joseph Mydell (Prospero).
The production ran from 5 - 28 June 2009 and was a cut-down version for children.
"The often fickle summer weather befits the tale's tempest-tossed location, as does Philip Witcomb's set of wooden ramps spiraling round a shallow pool of water. Tatty-sailed masts sprout up from it amid a clutter of thick tomes, battered trunks and rusted mannequins. The cast slosh gamely through this centre-stage passage, leaving it to Matt Costain's bird-like Ariel to climb and dangle from the rigging or perch atop the crossbars overhead. Several players, [Michael Camp] and Aikya Henry included, are double cast. The latter embodies Miranda as a sweet-natured pubescent girl with a big grin. As her father, Joseph Mydell strikes a well-spoken balance between stern control and beneficient forgiveness." ~ Donald Hutera, The Times, 16 June 2009, in Theatre Record 2009, Issue 12
