Paul Robeson
Controversial one-man show based on the life of Paul Robeson. On its way to Broadway, the play met resistance from notable figures such as Coretta Scott King, Paul Robeson, Jr. and 55 other prominent members of the African-American community. They complained "the play was an outrage to Paul Robeson, trivialising him...into a chocolate 'John Wayne.' It also accused the white commercial establishment of trying to subvert black history and co-opt black heroes. 'It's not my father,' Paul Robeson, Jr. told reporters." (C. Lee Jenner, "Paul Robeson (the Play) was persecuted in the US just about as stupidly as Paul Robeson", The Guardian, 1978).
