Andrew French trained at the Webber Douglas Academy, graduating in 1995. He obtained a BA from Leicester University and has an MA in Shakespeare Studies from the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon. For the Shakespeare Institute Players, he appeared as Angelo in Measure for Measure. His non-Shakespearean classical work includes Lodovico Sforza in Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton's The Honest Whore at Shakespeare's Globe in 1998, directed by Jack Shepherd.
His professional biographies mention having played the title role in Othello at the Oxford Shakespeare Festival, but no other information about this production is available. This is also true of his appearance in The Tempest, which was apparently a co-production between Theatr Clwyd and the Nottingham Playhouse and subsequenty went on an international tour.
