The Tempest (1980): Bristol Old Vic
PRINCIPAL CAST: Patrick Malahide (Ariel); Joanne Pearce (Miranda); Michael Rothwell (Prospero); Rudolph Walker (Caliban).
This production ran from 22 October - 15 November 1980.
Reviews have not been located, but the programme foregrounds Caliban's "Be not afeared; the isle is full of noises" speech, which hints at the foregrounding of Caliban in the production rather than Prospero. It was then still standard practice for only select members of the cast to have their biographies included in production programmes. However, given that Caliban is the third largest role in the play, it is worth noting that Rudolph Walker's biography was not included in the programme (The other cast members excluded from the programme's biography pages were the actors playing Sebastian, Ferdinand, Stephano, Iris, Ceres, Sailors, Spirits).
