The Taming of the Shrew (2013): Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
PRINCIPAL CAST: Kathryn Hunt (Baptista Minola); Kate Lamb (Katherina); Olivia Morgan (Bianca); Leah Whitaker (Petruchio).
This production was an all-female touring production with a cast of eight, which was staged in Elizabethan costume with what the marketing material described as "an Elizabethan-style stage". It played at the Globe Theatre, Bankside as well as toured the UK, Europe and Asia.
"Murphy's intriguing and enjoyable twist is to employ an all-female company of eight...Even though there's a neutralising layer of let's pretend about the proceedings - accentuated by the colourful, eclectic dressing-up box nature of the costumes - it's up to the audience to remind itself of the reality underpinning the situation....What's rich and refreshing about this approach is that we see the swaggering machismo of Leah Walker's ravishing Petruchio as a form of put-on identity - making sense of palpable vulnerability - which being left in no doubt about the final state of wifely submission he secures from Kate Lamb's lively-witted Katherina is a spectacular own-goal." ~ Dominic Cavendish, Daily Telegraph, 12 July 2013
