PRINCIPAL CAST: David Bradley (Hastings); Brian Cox (Buckingham); Clare Higgins (Queen Elizabeth); Peter Jeffrey (Clarence); Ian McKellen (Richard III); Eve Matheson (Lady Anne); Bruce Purchase (Edward IV).
This production had its press night on 25 July 1990 with its initial run in the Lyttelton closing on 18 September 1991. It played in rep with the same company as Richard Eyre's production of Richard III with Ian McKellen. It also toured internationally from 13 September - 16 December 1990, playing in Tokyo, Nottingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Belfast, Hamburg, Milan, Madrid, Paris, Cork and Cairo.
The cast list above is the original cast, but given the length of the show's run in its original and revival forms there were several cast changes. Hakeem Kae-Kazim appeared only in the original production. When the production re-opened at the Lyttelton in April 1991, there were some casting changes for the revival at the National and further cast changes occurred in 1992 for a further run in the Lyttelton combined with a tour of the USA in 1992. The production finally closed in 1993. Paul Bazely joined the cast for the 1992 - 1993 run. We have been unable to confirm any other cast changes relevant to this database.
