Othello (1989): Clwyd Theatr Cymru
PRINCIPAL CAST: Mark Culwick (Cassio); Elena Ferrari (Emilia); Hakeem Kae-Kazim (Othello); Oliver Parker (Iago); Anna Patrick (Desdemona).
This production ran from 22 September - 21 October 1989. It subsequently toured in mid-Wales and played in London, full details unknown.
The programme notes: "Until this century, Othello was played by white actors with the notable exception of the American black actor, Ira Eldredge [sic], who, unable to perform the play in the United States, made a great success of the role in Europe in the nineteenth century. In recent years, black actors have begun to play the part, most notably James Earl Jones in the United States in 1982/3. Both Othello and Iago are parts which have appealed to the great actor. In contemporary times, Frederic [sic] Valk, Godfrey Tearle, Harry Andrews, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier have all played the Moor, while notable Iagos include Donald Wolfit, Frank Finley [sic] and Ian McKellen. This is the first production of the play at Theatr Clwyd."
