Macbeth (1942): Piccadilly Theatre, London
PRINCIPAL CAST: Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies (Lady Macbeth); John Gieldgud (Macbeth); Nicholas Hannan (Duncan); Leon Quartermaine (Banquo).
This production arrived at the Piccadilly Theatre after what The Times described as "a long tour".
"a brilliant sketch of Ross by Mr. Abraham Sofaer."
~ The Times, 9 July 1942
"The setting, which jumps the play out of its proper period into the age of illuminated missals, has something of the splendour of more spacious days....An actor, however gifted, is at the mercy of his temperament. The contemplative Mr. Gielgud, who is perfectly at ease with the delicate intellect and flower-like imagination of Richard II and can render with brilliant exactness Lear's progress from worldly to spiritual authority, has not the same degree of sympathy with the comparatively simple character of Macbeth."
~ The Times, 9 July 1942
