Born in Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica. Raised and educated in England since 1962 when his parents moved to the UK. Trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where roles while training included Othello in a production directed by Christopher Denys. According to his biography in the Henry IV programme, Foster "led the National Theatre Company's tour of Mexico as Angelo in Measure for Measure directed by Michael Rudman".
