Shelley King was born in Calcutta, India in 1955. She trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1977. In her website biography she notes that she was immediately granted an Equity card "because it was accepted that there was no other card holding mixed race actor in the Union which at the time was a powerful closed shop."
