Ray Emmet Brown was born in Manchester to Jamaican parents and brought up in Whalley Range. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Brown trained as a barrister after he was wrongly arrested on suspicion of burglary by the Manchester police, according to an article in The Observer (link below).
