Lesley Ewen was born in Lambeth and grew up in Canada. She trained at the Vancouver Playhouse Acting School in British Columbia. She was a member of the 1988 Olympic Arts Festival production of Porgy and Bess. Ewen played in Othello at the Bristol Old Vic via the Canadian/British Equity Exchange Programme.
