Leo Wringer was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica and educated in England. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1978 where he was awarded the Shakespeare Prize. Wringer's biography in the Nottingham Playhouse programme for Othello notes that he understudied Paul Rhys as Hamlet and went on for Rhys at the Globe Theatre, Tokyo in 1999.
