Kumiko Mendl was born in Watford to a Japanese mother and a Jewish-German father. She trained at Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris. Mendl is a founder member and Creative Producer of Yellow Earth Theatre Company. In 2006 she set up a storytelling theatre company A Thousand Cranes with Vicky Ireland. A Thousand Cranes exposes young UK audiences to Japanese stories through performance.
