Errol John was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and the Old Vic programmes state he first visited England in 1951. He began his career in acting, but later turned to playwriting. His plays include Moon on a Rainbow Shawl. Errol John was the first black actor to play Othello on a London stage since Paul Robeson and only the third black actor to play the part in the capital.
